Drywall technicians install drywall on the vaulted ceiling. After the drywall is hung, drywall compound also known as mud is applied and left to dry. The fully cured mud is sanded down smooth. A paint crew will paint the vaulted ceiling. They may construct a scaffold and move the scaffold around, as needed. Or they may paint the ceiling with paint rollers attached to long extension poles.
Vaulting the ceiling is nearly always a project for a general contractor. The contractor can coordinate with the architect and structural engineer, along with all of the tradespeople who contribute to building a vaulted ceiling. The contractor can also work with your local permitting agency and help see the permits through to successful completion.

Drawing the eye upward to create a sense of volume and spaciousness, vaulted ceilings add drama to otherwise ordinary rooms. As with other architectural design elements, vaulted ceilings go in and out of vogue. But as floor plans trend smaller, ceilings tend to rise to give the illusion of a larger living space. Virtually any house with a sloped roof will support a vaulted ceiling, just as long as attic space exists in which to construct the vault.
Steeper roof pitches are necessary for higher vaults, while lower-pitched roofs will only accommodate shallower vaults. While any room can be vaulted, depending on your personal preference, most homeowners choose to vault the ceiling in a family room or great room where the effect can be fully appreciated. In the case of a cathedral vault, where the interior ceiling is parallel to the exterior roof line, installing skylights is a simple process.
Often a step up from even an foot-tall walls, the extra height afforded by the pitched ceiling makes even the average-sized room feel grand and airy. Could you tell me the dimensions of your joists? The skylights are on the north side of the house so we only get direct sunlight through them for a little while on summer afternoons when the sun is high in the sky.

And I built it in much the same way you did except that I did not paint my tongue and groove boards. My question for you is about your rafters. Did you beef them up?
Or did you just hang your new insulation, ceiling boards and electrical from the existing rafters? They look like 2x6s. Your ceiling looks really great as does the rest of the remodel. We are finishing up our Ikea kitchen as we speak.
I installed and raised my own 22 ft LVL so I can understand why a contractor would have charged over 5 grand for the job. We just have a fireplace and a door where you have a window and two walls. We have a vaulted ceiling with a nearly identical setup! One more thing! How many individual lights do you have installed and on how many tracks? Thanks so much! We just bought a split level that has pretty much an identical layout on the first floor as yours.
I love this! I live in a split rancher and have wanted to do away with my dining room for a long time. I have a small island only seats 2 but replacing with a much bigger one for more seating and more storage underneath is ideal.
And putting a desk on the other wall with more storage above is genius! We never sit to eat dinner there…thanks for sharing your labor of love.
